Oprah due for producers award, Globe nods today

Oprah Winfrey and other producers behind the upcoming Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker film The Great Debaters will receive an award from the Producers Guild of America for illuminating provocative social issues. Hey, that's what Oprah does.
I've admired Julia Roberts since I met with her in her office in New York some years ago. I like her honesty. Here's a dose of it, from the new Entertainment Weekly. "I've actually gone on a pop-culture fast. The TV shows and gossip magazines, it seems so polluting and toxic now. It's exhausting just looking at a newsstand these days. Your eyes cross. You can't even focus. People aren't as interested in making a cool movie or constructing interesting characters. Now it's just about being big and shiny and fabulous." -
NBC's The Office, Showtime's Dexter and HBO's The Wire are among contenders for top honors at the 60th Writers Guild Awards. Yes, THAT writers guild. The strike isn't stopping plans for the show to be held on Feb. 9.

Shia LaBeouf no longer faces criminal charges in Chicago for refusing to leave a downtown drugstore last month.He was in a Chicago courtroom for only minutes Wednesday before prosecutors said they had received a letter from Walgreen Co. and a security company saying they didn't want to continue the case.

As to why Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds. I would like to say Joe Mantegna has been chosen to fill the roll Mandy left, but I do not agree he is doing it ably. The only reason I still watch the show is because of the strenght of the supporting cast.
