Ricki Lake's new career
Posted by Lorrie LynchToday's news: Matthew McConaughey's girlfriend Camila Alves is expecting their baby. There's definitely baby fever in Hollywood. Christina Aguilera and Nicole Richie gave birth on the same day last week; Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Alba all are pregnant. There could not be better timing for Ricki Lake, mother, actress, talk show host and now documentary producer, to opens her film The Business of Being Born. It premeries tonight in L.A., and you can check out the trailer for it below.
"It's the best week of my professional life," Lake told me in a phone call last night. "It's the first project entirely generated by me...from my brain, my money." The idea stems from the stressful delivery of her own first child, son Milo, more than 10 years ago. Lake wanted to question the way American women give birth and she turned to director Abby Epstein to do it with her. "I had this idea and a dream to be an advocate for moms and babies."
Ricki, who will turn 40 this year, told me she'd like to do more producing. "I told my ex-husband - we're still good friends - I could die tomorrow. I feel I have done what I'm meant to do." But she also feels at peace with all parts of her life. She's at an all-time-low weight, is doing work she's proud of and loves being with her two sons as much as possible. She's not dating but did have a little public flirtation with actor John Cusack when she was substituting on The View. Unfortunately, she told me, that didn't go anywhere.
