Oscar's Best Foreign Film prediction
Posted by Kathy RowingsWe've got another movie report from our L.A. folks, who tell us this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Film could well go to an Austrian sleeper called The Counterfeiters. It’s the story of a scoundrel whose counterfeiting career is interrupted by a trip to a concentration camp. He is saved from the gas chamber and drafted into the Nazi plot to counterfeit British and American currency. What's really intriguiging is that this actually happened in 1944-45. At first immoral and self-centered, he sees the scruples and sacrifices of others and survives the war a changed man. Austrian actor Karl Markovics is the unlikeliest of heroes but tellingly conveys the gray areas that any camp survivor had to live in. Check out the trailer below, and come back to the blog later this afternoon for a few more movie tidbits.
