Brendan Fraser's Journey to the Center of the Earth

Kathy Rowings got a chance last week to see Brendan Fraser (left) AND his new movie. No, not The Mummy 3 - though that comes out in August - but Journey to the Center of the Earth, which opens nationwide July 11. The cool thing about this film is that it will be released in 3-D, in addition to the usual two dimensions. Kathy saw the 3-D version, thus having to wear the goofy glasses, but there were a few technical difficulties (double vision at first). Once those were straightened out the movie got started and seemed to delight most of the audience, press and kids alike. Read more below for her full report.
Before the film started, Fraser and director Eric Brevig (who also directed Total Recall and Pearl Harbor) told the audience what to expect from "the first dramatic movie to be released in 3-D," as Fraser put it. At first, it seemed like we could expect very bad headaches, because there were technical difficulties that caused some serious visual problems. After they rebooted, though, the movie got going and was, I have to say, pretty impressive. There are still a few kinks to work out (I though parts of it were still a little hard on the eyes), but the 3-D aspect does kick the excitement up several notches. My roommate, John, and I jumped out of our seats more than once when it seemed like giant man-eating fish were coming right at us. The movie will still be entertaining in 2-D, since most people won't know what they're missing.
After the movie, Fraser and Brevig entertained questions, though the elephant in the room — i.e., the question that all of the press wanted to ask but weren't supposed to because this wasn't the time — was Fraser's other upcoming movie, The Mummy 3. Who better to diffuse the situation than one of the kids in the audience, who simply asked Fraser which he liked better, Journey to the Center of the Earth or The Mummy? After plenty of laughter from the crowd, Fraser floundered for a bit and then just coughed "The Mummy 3, out August 1" under his breath.
