Fall TV schedules come out this week
Posted by Lorrie Lynch
It's going to be a newsy week for avid TV watchers. Network honchos and some of their stars are gathered in New York City beginning today for the annual "upfront" presentations, where they woo advertisers with their fall schedules and show off new series for the season to begin in September. That means we viewers will find out which of our favorites will return and what new fare may prove interesting. Our TV editor, T.J. Walter, will be tracking the upfronts for us and heads to NYC mid-week to attend some of the presentations.
NBC gets things started today with a party at 30 Rock. But it released its schedule -- including just four new shows (but perennial favorites like The Office, pictured at right, will be back) -- a month ago. Click "Read more" below for a sneak peek at some of what is coming from the other networks.

Fox has canceled Back to You but inexplicably continued 'Til Death (at right). It canceled two mid-season shows I liked, Canterbury's Law and New Amsterdam. But Fox also bought J.J. Abrams' new sci-fi series Fringe, a Joss Whedon drama Dollhouse, a Jason Bateman-directed comedy The Inn and an animated series Sit Down, Shut Up. (Sounds charming, doesn't it?)
ABC will renew David Kelley's Boston Legal and pick up his new series Life on Mars. Women's Murder Club dies while the rest of the schedule is so last season: Pushing Daisies, Dirty, Sexy, Money and Private Practice return. Ashton Kutcher's Miss/Guided - a refreshing comedy - may get a spot, and the network is expected to announce it has picked up Scrubs, which leaves NBC.
The CW plans a Beverly Hills 90210 spin-off (Jennie Garth has signed on to play her old
character as a guidance counselor), a new fashion reality show called Stylista, a series called How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls (ugh!) and to continue its best bets Gossip Girl (at left), One Tree Hill and Smallville. No word on Reaper, yet.
CBS is likely to cancel Shark, keep The Unit, add a comedy (though just what isn't settled) and bring several new shows Jerry Bruckheimer's thriller Eleventh Hour, a crime drama, The Mentalist with cute Aussie Simon Baker, Mythological Ex, with Elizabeth Reaser, and a doctor drama, Can Openers, that sounds like a Grey's Anatomy clone.
