Doris Day interview brings out fans

Doris_day_book Thank you, Doris Day fans, for all the lovely memories you wrote to our interview with her biographer, posted on the blog last Thursday. My late grandfather loved Doris Day (and the Lennon Sisters on Lawrence Welk) and I grew up listening to her albums on the hi-fi when I visited his house in Clifton, N.J.  As was the case with recent reader remembrances of Frank Sinatra, I am touched by how personally you feel. And I love one reader's note to Barbara Walters and Oprah: "Your challenge is to give us an exclusive interview with (Day) for one more glimpse and appreciation of this most admired and forever loved star!"

WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER I HAD THE SOUNDTRACKS FROM MOST OF DORIS DAY"S FILMS. MOM HAD A BIG MIRROR IN THE LIVINGROOM AND I WOULD PUT THE MUSIC ON AND I WOULD SUDDENLY BECOME DORIS. MY FAVORITE WAS THE FILM CALAMITY JANE. BOY IF THAT MIRROR COULD TALK.I WOULD BE CALAMITY. I HAD IT DOWN TO A TEE. I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE JUST LIKE HER. IT WAS A NICE DREAM. LOVE YOU DORIS. I WISH YOU WELL AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THE PLEASURE YOU HAVE BROUGHT INTO MY LIFE. TAKE CARE OF THOSE CRITTERS.

I was a WAF in the U.S. Air Force in 1948, and our squadron had the honor of being Honor Guard when the Bob Hope show came to Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX and performed for the troops. Doris Day sang with Les Brown's band, and when she sang "It's Magic", all the troops sitting on a hillside watching the show, just sighed and almost melted into the hillside - she had such a beautiful voice, no matter what song she sang - besides - she was so cute, sexy and bubbly! Also on the program was Jerry Colonna and "Granny Clampett" - at that time she was Irene Ryan, a comedian. It was a terrific show and one I'll always remember from my Basic Training Days. Sure wish Doris would make a new album with all her hits - those songs from the 40's and 50's always keep coming back!

Lorrie,
Loved your article on David Kaufman's new book about Doris Day - it was also great to read so many wonderufl e-mails from people who love Doris and wish her well. Count me among them.

I had the incredible opportunity to meet my idol, Doris Day. Had been a fan since age 10 and made my way to California. Once I got to know her through friends Doris personally invited me into her world to become her personal assistant in the '70s while she was filming her TV show at CBS.
Later I lived with her for nearly two years.

What a lovely Lady! We had great fun together and shared a love of animals. I have written my memoir about this special time in a book called: "Day At A Time -- An Indiana Girl's Sentimental Journey to Doris Day's Hollywood and Beyond." My website is:
www.dayatatimesentimentaljourney.com

It is wonderful to hear all the nice comments from people from all over who have such great admiration for this lovely Lady. Doris makes everyone happy.

Thanks, Lorrie, for letting us have a chance to share our thoughts via your blog.

When I was young I loved Doris Day's Movies & just loved her so much that I named my Daughter after Doris Day. I just loved her singing. She is a very beautiful person.I would love to be able to write to her so I could let her know how I liked her so much that is why I named her Doris.Whenever Doris Day would cry in her movies I would cry with her. Sincerely yours, vbstickney@peoplepc.com

All I heard about growing up was Doris Day and Rock Hudson. What a couple. Well, that only worked out in the movies.

Mom had Doris Day's Greatest Hits. I don't know where it is now but I used to play it all the time. I think my favorite was "Everybody Loves A Lover."

Too bad Ms. Day doesn't come back to visit Cincinnati, where it all started. I believe she's enjoying life in the Monterey area of California with her dogs. Great career.
