Jimmy Buffett concert memories
Posted by Lorrie Lynch
Jimmy Buffett fans — parrotheads all — you made my Sunday. What a treat to read your memories of seeing Jimmy in concerts all over the states, among them Hawaii, Oregon, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Florida, New York, Massachusetts...well, you get the picture. I love that some of you are a bit "foggy" when it comes to your JB concerts.
But you really blew us away with your entries to our Margaritaville lyrics contest. After one day we're up to nearly 4,000 entries, many having to do with various kinds of alcohol and beach living. You have until July 24 to enter, so go to it!

My first Buffett show was at the Euphoria Tavern in Portland Oregon in 1973, many beers great music, a buddy got us backstage and sat and drank beer with Jimmy and Fingers Taylor till about 4 am, I
still tell the story
I have been to a couple of JB concerts at Blossom music center and always had the best time. The only thing is he hasn't been to cleveland in some time and I need a JB fix, PLEASE COME TO CLEVELAND SOON!!!!
After hearing, in 1973, "Why don't we get drunk and Screw" in a redneck bar I was enthralled. The next day I went to the biggest record store, at the time, in NYC. I bought one of the 200 to 300 copies of his first album. The next week I see a hand written sign in the window of Bubba's bar and grill in Coconut Grove, my hometown, and bought tickets for the all the 4 shows. The last show had only 12 people and I sat right in front. My favorite beach, of the '90's, was Lamai on the island of Samui in the Sea of Siam. Met Parrotheads from all over the earth and life could not have been better.
My husbands and my one and only (so far) concert was the 2002 Far Side of the World outside of Pittsburgh, PA So excited and amused were we, all the tailgating, like at a Buffalo Bills game, but with truckloads of sand for beaches, bars and ballads. What a crowd of parrtohead pleasers.
We have JB's books and albums and CD's and DVD's. Not sure what our favorite one is: "Why don't we get drunk and ..." always brings a smile to our face. As is the concerts on the big screen in the Margaritaville Cafe in Key West FL and Panama City Beach FL. Just great!!!
Now watching our 2 year old grandaughter try to sing "fins to the left..." is priceless. Someday she will also get to indulge in the Margarittaville blender of frozen concoctions, but there's alot of time for that.
My first was my most memorable location, at Red Rocks amphitheater outside of Denver, CO. Besides the sheer joy a JB concert brings, the surroundings were incredible. One problem? I refused to leave to use the bathroom and though my bladder was going to explode by the time it was over. But the most fun I had was at Irvine with who turned out to be my current wife, my best friend from college and a number of other good friends. It was my first experience with the Three Masted Cadillac and the Tortilla Toss. (Even though this was my 7th show at the time). My soon to be wife had to show her boobs for chocolate chip cookies and we had all sorts of salacious fun, even in the porta potties. Our most recent JB show was at MGM Grand (2nd time there) and although I love Vegas, I wish his shows could be outside. We dressed up as a Pirate and his wench (2 days before Halloween) and had a great time taking photos with all the other parrot heads and saying Arrgggh about 1000 times that night. If you would like to know about a Dirty Pirate, just ask.
If it weren't for Jimmy I might have gone insane. His laid back attitude combined with his disciplined work ethic finds me at peace with myself. Most of Jimmy's lyrics are about death, life and the journey through it all. Surrounded with questions with no obvious answers but some serious thoughts that we will not become easy for us to answer. The observer as he, I find true sincere down to Earth tranquility by his constant momentum. I am not a drinker or smoker and can appreciate his music with optimism.
Fruitcake from the City of Sharks, Chicago to the
new life of SBPH of Florida. Keep bakin Jimmy!
All great stories of Jimmy Buffett concerts, but mine is definitely hard to beat. June 1995 at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI. I won a contest before the show and got to go on stage with Jimmy and the Coral Reefer Band to play Cheeseburger in Paradise, then had a guitar solo in the middle of the song. 35,000 plus people dancin', singin' and screamin' and there I was playing guitar with Jimmy Buffett on stage. Truly the most memorable thing I ever have and probably ever will get to do as a guitar player.
I've been to MANY Jimmy concerts. I guess my favorite was on June 5 2006. It rained the whole show. But I tell ya the whole place was packed as if it was sunny. When Jimmy came out on stage he said "Welcome Parrotheads to the biggest bird bath in the south". I had also took my two teenage stepchildren and they found a muddy hill to slide down and they were covered like a pig in heaven. My family sat on a hill with thunder and lighting flashin all around us, but that's what faithfull Parrotheads do. Call us fans. I love him and I go every chance I get.
It was 1972 and Jimmy wasn't very well known yet. I was working as a DJ (air personality) at WJBO-FM in Baton Rouge La. One Saturday night at a modest sized theater, after the last feature ended, we put on a Jimmy Buffett midnight concert. I think the cost for concert goers was $2.00 (but don't quote me). Jimmy was a little drunk and of course I gave him some of my weed, just in case. It was a great evening. I think he said it was the first time he played "Life is just a tire swing" in concert. What I remember most was telling my friends that this is the kind of guy that could develop quite a following. (I should have invested in him). Since then, I've seen him about 10 times in concert. Always a great show.
First saw Jimmy in concert in 1973 or 74 at the Euphoria Tavern in Portland, Oregon. Admission was a $5 cover charge. By the time the all-female warm-up band was done people were ready and screaming for the main event. Beer flowed freely and a thick sweet haze draped the audience. Jimmy kept asking that we blow some his way. I remember dancing with a Euphoria waitress at one point -- but not much else.....
20 FRIENDS RENTED A LIMO-BUS AND WENT TO BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER IN OHIO. WE ALL HAD HAWIIAN SHIRTS, LIES, GRASS SKIRTS, AND SOME EVEN WORE COCONUT BRAS. WE SANG ALONG WITH EVERY SONG AND HAD AN ABSOLUTE BLAST. MARGARITAS WERE FLOWING SMOOTH. AS WE LEFT THE CONCERT OUR LIMO BUS BROKE DOWN AND COULDN'T MAKE IT UP A SMALL HILL. THE GUYS ALL GOT OUT AND PUSHED IT UP THE HILL. THE GIRLS HAD TO PEE AND THERE WAS NOWHERE TO DO IT. BLOSSOM IS SURROUNDED BY WOODS. SO WE DID AS GUYS DO AND WENT IN THE WOODS. wE HAVE NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD IN ALL OUR LIVES! WERE ALL TRUE PARROTHEADS AND JIMMYS CONCERTS ARE ALWAYS SO MUCH FUN! HE HASN'T COME TO CLEVELAND, OHIO IN ABOUT 5 YEARS. PLEASE JIMMY-COME BACK!!!!!!!!!
I have never been able to see Jimmy in person, or in Concert. I was either in the wrong town or did not know about it.
I mentioned to my kids that tickets to a Jimmy Buffett concert would be absolutely awesome for my birthday next week (July 18, I will be 70). My Grandchildren call me "Rockin GMAW",anyway most of them.
My favorite Margarita Paradise is Harbor Island in the Bahamas. I was only there one time but it is a memory I will always cherish. Thanx for a chance to relive a memory and spout off about it.
I may have silver hair, but I love island rhythms and dance like a kid when I hear them. My Margueritaville is the village of Nosara on the west coast of Costa Rica. The beaches there are superb, with long blue Pacific waves to surf in or just watch; what beautiful, unspoiled country!...and the rum and Coke ain't bad either.
Keep on rockin', Jimmy!
I.'VE NEVER BEEN TO A JIMMY BUFFET CONCERT-BUT IT'S ON MY BUCKET LIST-I WAS 80 LAST APRIL.
I HELP DECORATE THE CARS THAT MY DAUGHTERS AND GRANDCHLDREN DRIVE TO HIS CONCERTS AND LOVE HEARING ABOUT THEIR FUN WHEN THEY GET HOME--THE PICTURES ARE WILD-
I SENT MY NEW FIRST VERSE IN SO MAYBE I CAN GET A LITTLE CLOSER TO MY OWN MARGARITAVILLE.
I love Jimmy Buffett concerts. The tailgate parties are the absolute best. And the concerts are attended by young and old and everyone gets into the music. I just attended the Philadelphia, PA concert in June and the day was fabulous even with the rain delay after the opening act. It did not deter people from having a great time. I love Keywest and am hoping to some day see Jimmy at his store.
October 1982 in Panama City Florida - My future wife Holly (now of 25 years) and I attended our first JB concert. We both liked his music but had no idea we were attending an event! We especially remember when the "Fins" showed up. A great memory!
I have yet to see Jimmy in concert, but I'd love to go. My Margaritaville is the Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina.
Secluded beach, sailing, fishing, shelling, surfing, Parrothead music and checkin' out the Loggerhead Turtles, it doesn't get any better than this!
We've never been to see Jimmy in concert because we are always a day late or a dollar short for tickets..but our favorite "Margaritaville" is the Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico...
Wife and I love Jimmy Buffet, but have never gotten to see one of his concerts. He usually has a concert every Thursday and Saturday before Labor Day, here in Massachusettes at the Tweeter Centre. But everytime his tickets go on sale we can never get through on the phonelines to order them, and when we finaly get through they are all sold out, usually in about 10 to 15 minutes. LOL. And we cannot afford the prices that peoples sell them for online. My 29 year old son has been to four of Jimmies concerts, but has only gotten to see the show the last 2 times. The first 2 times he met some girls and they stay in the parking lot tailgating and partying all night.LOL. This years concert in Massachusetts he was able to get 6 tickets online at $125 each, so he gave 2 to his mother and she and her sister are going also. I told my wife that she could give her sister my ticket. I really don't enjoy large crowds anymore and I just enjoy listening to Jimmies CDs. The only concerts I go to regardless of the crowds is a John Forgery Concert. He is my favorite performer and then Jimmy Buffet is my second favorite.
I saw Jimmy the first time in Nashville around 1974 and many times after that. He did a show in Nashville with the cast on his leg, too. He just gets cooler all the time. I've read the books and bought the 8 tracks, cassettes and cd's since the first time. God bless "God's Own Drunk" - still my favorite Buffett story.
I've seen Jimmy many times, mostly at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. Alpine has the best tail-gating in the world! I've also seen Jimmy in Chicago and Indiana, but Wisconsin is the best. My wife and I got married on the day of a Buffett show, and amazingly, she didn't want to tie the knot in the parking lot...so we drove to Indy three days before the wedding so we could still get our Buffett fix. I have to admit, I remember the beginning of every Buffett show, but rarely the end!
Been to concerts from the very first row at the Greek Theater, to the very last row at the Universal Ampitheater, and all the rows in between at Irvine Meadows, every show has been a delight. Jimmy has been copied, but never equaled. Like Jimmy, Peter Pan is my idol, I'll be a Parrothead in paradise forever.
So im a YOUNG parrothead :) and have only been to a few concerts, all in CINCY!! the whole greater cincy area goes nuts when he comes in town. the tailgating is unbelievable. i love jimmy!!
Best concert, bar none was the 2 day festival at the Gorge in George Washington. There was a camp ground ajacent to the ampitheatre and people brought in flatbeads with sand for their own private beaches, trailers with tiki huts, we brought a 16' in diameter teepee with 24 foot teepee poles... and two dogs in shark costumes.
I married the man I went to my first Buffett concert with back at G R White Collisum at Texas A&M back in 1983. It was our first date... AWWWWW!
I've been going to Buffett shows since the mid 80's. I've been to Carowinds, Dean Smith Center, Memorial Stadium, Walnut Creek Pavillion, Charlotte Colliseum, Phillips Arena, Blockbuster Pavillion.
Concert memories--Jimmy joking about the way we had fixed up Carmichael Auditorum before the first Smith Center show and sing "Let's Get Drunk, and Practice Safe Sex, scoring 2nd row tickets day of show for me and gf at the time, Charlotte show in 2001 right after #3 died and the tribute Jimmy did for him (I hadn't cried about it until then), taking my 9 yo son to his first Buffett show this year after all the years of making him listen to the music, playing Volcano for my students in Earth Science to decode the reference to things we study in the lyrics.
