Jimmie Johnson is happy to chat
Posted by Kathy RowingsOK, Nascar fans, here's a fun little story about Jimmie Johnson (at left). Our senior writer Dennis McCafferty interviewed him a few weeks ago and tried to do "something a little tricky" beforehand. Things didn't go quite as planned, but No. 48 was a good sport about all of it. Here's Dennis's report on how it went down:
"Jimmie was supposed to call my home phone for the interview. My son just adores him -- he has a No. 48 Lowe's Jimmie Johnson bike helmet. I knew that maybe it wouldn't be too cool to ask him to say hi, so I left the phone by my son while he was playing video games, so he'd pick up when it rang. As it turns out, it did ring while he was sitting by it, but my son doesn't usually answer the phone when it's off the hook so he didn't realize he had to push a button to turn it on. So it rang and rang. After that, I figured I better pick up next time it rings. When Jimmie called back he was good humored about everything and excited to talk about his foundation -- especially when it comes to helping people in his original stomping grounds of South Carolina. Look for more on that and how you can help when our full story runs on Aug. 17."
