Kathy's Weekend Outlook: TV marathons
Posted by Lorrie LynchThis time tomorrow I'll be on a plane headed for the beach and a family vacation, so needless to say I'm looking forward to this weekend. Assuming Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Hanna stay where they're supposed to, I'll be busy sunning myself for the next five days. How will you spend your long Labor Day weekend?
First on my beach reading list will be Nina Garcia's new book, The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own. It will give me a nice excuse to try to talk my parents into buying me some new "must-have" clothes (sure, I'm not technically going back to school, but it is back-to-school shopping season). You can use the Project Runway judge's book as your own guide to what you should pick up at all the Labor Day sales.
Also, don't miss USA WEEKEND's cover story on next Friday's big Stand Up To Cancer telethon. Three huge stars — Jennifer Aniston, Sidney Poitier and Terrence Howard — came together for our cover to talk about how their lives have been affected by cancer.
If those hurricanes do rain on our beach parade, there's plenty of TV to watch. Lots of networks are running TV marathons, with everything from SOAPNet's 24-hour run of Beverly Hills 90210 (the original) episodes — which will get you ready for the Tuesday premiere of the CW's new version — to a replay of all five of this season's intriguing Mad Men episodes on AMC. Lorrie told you about TNT's marathon of The Closer, and you can find info about many more Labor Day TV marathons here.
And, as a child of the 80s, I can't NOT be excited for this: the New Kids on the Block release their new CD on Tuesday. Is anything on this CD going to top The Right Stuff or Step by Step? Probably not, but Joey, Jordan, Donnie, Jonathan and Danny were permanent fixtures in my pre-teen musical scene (and inspiration for our kickball team name, New Kicks on the Block), so I've got to at least give the new album a listen.

Did you go to Sanibel? I should have come with you!!! I assume the hurricanes didn't mess with your plans. Grama and I went to "Mama Mia" (my second time) and I watched a lot of the "Jon and Kate Plus Eight" marathon - and of course, the US Tennis Open. Take care!
Your survey on "Who is your favorite Superman" failed to recognize Kirk Alyn as the first screen Superman. So as not to leave Mr Alyn out, I'll vote for him.
