Mr. McCafferty and his opinion of Neil Young as a great grunge rocker was a joke right? It appears the only reason Neil Young was interviewed was his release of his left wing socialist anti-US documentary, “CSNY/Déjà vu”! Mr. McCafferty failed to mention in his story that Neil Young was a high school drop out, is currently a Canadian citizen and has declined to seek U.S. citizenship and who entered the U.S. illegally in the late 1960’s and did not apply for and receive lawful residency status until 1970. He was an avid anti-Vietnam war critic who was not even remotely eligible for the U.S draft as he was not a U.S. citizen. He continues to use his celebrity to criticize our government, our president and our military personnel. Way back when I was a naive high school student (1968-1972), I fell for the liberal anti-war socialist-communist propaganda groups which included the voice/opinions of Neil Young. Had I known then of his history, I would never have spent a dime on his music. He’s nothing more than an aging over the hill hypocrite. He enjoys the advantages of our countries tax system because it benefits his capitalistic agenda and success with a much lower tax rate than what he would be required to pay to support the socialist system in his home country of Canada. So, he’s not really a socialist as he portends in his ranting. He’s a true capitalist and enjoys the fruits of our free market capitalistic system where anyone can make a great living with a bit of hard work and minimal talent.

Even though Neil Young is one of my all time favorites I would have to go with Eddie Vedder. Since I have seen him in concert more than ONCE I would have to say he is definately the BETTER MAN of the three. Besides, he absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Since Neil was tagged 'Godfather of Grunge' I would say he is the best grunge rocker of all time. Cobain and Vedder were a huge part of the Grunge movement, but as far as the best...Neil wins hands down. The guy has been doing his thing since the 60s...and is still relevant with his music today. I hope the guy lives forever, or at least out lives me, because I dont want to know a world without new Neil Young music!!

IMO Eddie Vedder is the best grunge singer of the three. While all three are great writers, Eddie's perfect pitch and angst soulful delivery give any song he sings believable and heartfelt as though the words are a part of him. Through the years he has proven music is his life as much as his life is music.

I don't consider Neil Young a "Grunge Rocker" at all. I believe Kurt is the best because he was the first to even be called Grunge. He wrote what he felt & didn't care what people thought. He basically invented it.

Out of the three, Neil's the only pick and thanks that he's not stuck in a rut. Most every album (can I still say that word) will put a smile on your face and peace in your mind.

Neil is the man! He wins hands down. Eddie and Kurt are nothing compared to the greatest rocker off all time.

Neil is what Rock & Roll was meant to be...a little dirty (or grungy if prefer), loud (when it demands it), slightly awkward (in the best youthful kinda way), meant for the young (but so good it endures the passing of time...as the fans do), annoying to some but essential to others. Neil has something for everyone but only because he follows his muse rather then what other demand of him. Balls of Steel and the swagger to carry it all off. Keep on Rockin' the Whole Frickin' World Neil!!

Gotta vote for Grandpa Granola. Neil Young is the original hippie/grunge maniac. Just listen to how he strangles the strings on Cowgirl In The Sand.

NEIL YOUNG IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN A ONE OF A KIND ICON. NO ONE ELSE CAN EVEN GET CLOSE TO THE MUSIC HE MAKES. THERE ARE NO WORDS. JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!!

I have always been a die-hard Neil Young fan (since "Ohio") and I love Eddie Vedder, but Neil has ben around so much longer. I agree with Martin, Mark, and Bruce - Neil is one of a kind. He was mature when he started and has grown in so many ways through out his career. Kurt Cobain - was way to into himself. He allowed his addiction to rule his career, therefore taking away any long-lasting music legacy. P.S. What's up with Greg anyway?

Holy cr*p, man. The three listed are all extremely influential, but you left out Alice In Chains, & also the winner by far... CHRIS CORNELL of Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, & M.A.C.C. Not only does he have the best voice & lyrics of the 90s (not to mention his solo & Audioslave accomplishments that followed)he is also quite the guitarist. His work is the most strong & diverse since the days of the greats like Led Zep & Jimi.

I'm not sure these 3 men belong in the same category. I don't know much about Neil Young, my age has a lot to do with that. I wasn't a Nirvana fan, I liked a few of their songs, but not enough to be a "true" fan. However, I love Pearl Jam. I admire and respect Eddie Vedder. I don't think he should be considered as a grunge icon (only my opinion). Yes, he came from that area and era, but a true grunge icon? I do not agree. Someone commented, "what did the other two ever do?" I'm thinking that person's age is coming into play as well. Vedder has been through and overcame so much in his lifetime!! He has shared some of it through his music, which in turn, has helped fans who have been through similar situations. The "Into the Wild" soundtrack he created is INCREDIBLE! He is a genius as well as a generous human being! Love Eddie!!!

Kurt Cobain is a big loser and Eddie Vedder is a little obscure. They don't belong in the same list as Neil Young. Neil Young is an icon with a huge catalog. What did the other two ever do ?

Kurt, hands down. He's the only one that's infuenced my guitar playing

Posted by: brian | Aug 10, 2008 12:39:31 PM | Flag as abusive

Definitely Kurt Cobain. He just burned out too early but all his compositions are so poetic and amazing for his young age. Neil Young isn't grunge. He's great and I love him but he's from a different era.

On behalf of everyone else who is thinking it, I want to state that this is the stupidest question that has ever been asked on the internet. :) No offense!

How many people do you know that are still writing after 40plus years He's gonna die on stage, but he'll never burn out, hell, an aneurism couldn't take him out ! ! !

Neil Is without peer.
Even Dylan can't play at the level of Neil.

Posted by: | Aug 8, 2008 6:54:44 PM | Flag as abusive

The original is always considered the best and like any fine wine, Neil Young only gets better with age. At 62 he still writes and rocks better than most 1/4 his age. When you see him with CSN he always seems to be the driving force, the extra oomph they need. His ballads are on a pare with James Taylor and his lyrics are comparable to Dylan. He's one of a kind, so it's hard to pigeon hole Neil Young, but yeah, he's a better grunge rocker than the 2 great ones that followed him. He's burning out.
