60th Emmy Awards hits and misses
Posted by Lorrie Lynch
Would you be surprised if I told you that ratings for last night's 60th annual Emmy Awards show were one of the lowest ever, lower than last year, and the year before that? Of course, you wouldn't — particularly if you actually watched the show, which was sorely lacking in entertainment. Let's discuss some hits and misses:
• A Miss. The five reality show nominees as hosts. Together they were moronic. When the opening bit went to tearing off Heidi Klum's tux to reveal a (gasp!) revealing outfit I thought I was in the pre-feministic 1960s portrayed so well in Mad Men. Eew.
• A Hit. Ricky Gervais. Best line: When he asked Steve Carell, "Have you even gone to see Ghost Town? I sat through Evan Almighty."
• A Miss. Not inviting any one from the cast of best drama winner Mad Men to present an award (as creator Matthew Weiner pointed out in the press room after their win). Did you see how gorgeous January Jones and Jon Hamm looked last night? Instead, we got The Hills' Lauren Conrad? Even Conrad's presenting partner David Boreanaz looked pained.
• A Hit. The political stuff. Laura Linney, a winner for HBO's John Adams, gave props to the founding father's saying, "I'm so grateful and thankful for the community organizers that helped form our country." Tom Hanks, whose company Playtone produced Adams, said "The election between Jefferson and Adams was filled with innuendo, lies, a bitter partisan press and disinformation. How great we've come so far since then."
• A Miss. The whole anniversary/classics theme. Where were scenes of Ted Danson in Cheers? Sally Field in Gidget or The Flying Nun? Sharon Gless in Cagney & Lacey? Phylicia Rashad in The Cosby Show? They were all nominated for new work last night. Instead, we got Martin Sheen, not nominated, in The West Wing? Either Emmy has no clout or producers didn't try very hard.
• A Hit. Josh Groban singing a medley of classic TV theme songs. Who ever would have bet THAT would work?
Your turn. What do you think was a hit or miss? Tell us by posting in the comments section below. Can't wait to read your thoughts.

Did you know that according to kitchen furniture?
Make your choice of grass seeds?
Or how about hardwood lumber?
I live in Perth, Western Australia and missed the live telecast via cable/satellite and instead watched the 2-hour edited version on free-to-air TV. I found the whole show boring, particularly the five hosts!!! There was very little 'entertainment' but I guess I missed some of it because the Josh Groban medley didn't appear on the edited version - nor did the anniversary/classics segment. And Mary Tyler Moore should have worn a dress with sleeves that would have been more flattering for her ageing arms!! And the face is a bit distorted around the eyes!! A result of the knife I guess!! I wouldn't be in a hurry to watch it again next year.
