Here are their picks for Top 5 Breakout Series this fall. Check them out, see if you agree and then be sure to tell us in the comments below what you think about the state of TV: Is it getting better or worse?

I can't believe all this hatred for TV.... It's not all that bad but then it's not all that great either. I do have a select group of shows I watch like House, MD, Desperate Housewives and Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. I do watch Dancing With The Stars and American Idol when it is on. Also tune in to HGTV and Foodnetwork and sometimes the cable news networks. I used to watch the soaps but they are directed to a younger audience. So I use that time to read, work on genealogy and try to find some project to work on.

The one thing that bugs me most are these stupid commericals... they are so ignorant, nonsensical, and downright insulting.... there are a few that are cute but they are far and few between.

TV without a doubt has gotten much worse. There are only a few shows that I watch anymore. That would be What Not to Wear and Bones. Otherwise, Tv is just a vast wasteland. If I see one more reality show I'm going to toss my cookies. I HATE WHAT TV HAS BECOME, BORING, SENSELESS AND LAZY.

Blood Ties which was shown on Lifetime and is now being rerun on Lifetime for Real Women deserves to come back. It was well-written, well cast, it was funny, dramatic where it had to be and incredibly amusing. It proved viewers with a great independant, strong willed female role model, guess the network executives couldn't take a strong woman. It pointed out good and evil and the characters were always on the right side.

TV asI know has gone RIGHT INTO THE CRAPPER.When I was growing we had FEWER channels but more QUALITY shows.I wish we go back to the days of 3 or4 channel, blck and white, family friendly entertainment instead of the DRECK we have RIGHT NOW.NEWTON MINNOW WAS RIGHT.By the way,DONT GET ME STARTED ON LOCAL TV.

TV is horrible, worsening and disgusting. We read more books and subscribe to Netflicks. When we do watch it's the Weather Channel, PBS,Sports,HGTV,DIY,Discovery and History channels. And sometimes the old western movies that are not so graffic. We are constantly bombarded with sex, awful language and tragedy in the world. Couldn't we have progamming about the beauty in the world, kinder subjects that accentuate all our blessings? TV makes the world look black, nasty, immoral and scary. What about the good insipring parts of life ? Thanks for your survey, but does anyone but USA Weekend and your readers, really care enought to improve television? I hope so. In the end, perhaps a black screen is the best screen. Turn it off and live life.

I don't know what kind of morons are coming up with these TV shows, but they are pathetic. I am so disgusted with the foul language, nudity, sex, drug use, etc. that I rarely watch any of the so called prime time TV programs. It is absolutely the worst for young people and defining their values. Who in Hollywood (mostly) has this sewer mentality? I wish we could go back to some decent, interesting programs that anyone in the family can watch.

It is getting worse. Major news networks are polical networks, comedy is shallow and not very funny, reality shows are a waste--we live realilty every day in some way, I don't need to re-live it on tv in my living room. We also often resort to the oldies on TVLand (I Love Lucy, Mash, Andy Griffin, etc.) and the radio and CD's are sometimes our last resort for company in the evenings. One of our favorites is Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? Nice spin on game shows.

For the most part, TV is horrible. Most of the shows are vulgar or stupid. There are way way too many commercials. Whatever happened to "commercials were supposed to go away once we got cable?" circa 1970's

I think TV is a bad influence on our children and even adults. It conditions us to assume that sex, violence, sassing your parents, disregard for elders and swearing are ok.

In addition to all the nonsense police, sex, reality programs, and duplication of programs on satellite, even the news programs have become shallow. They are not broadcasting all the news any more and many of the news people are so self opinionated they all talk at the same time and about their family life. Who cares? The network execs are so busy counting their millions they don't care what is being produced and the writers today are not creative. They are air heads. Sorry but it's true.

TV is most certainly getting worse. I was in high school when "The Graduate" was released as, I believe, an "X"-rated movie. Fast-forward about 30 years, when my husband and I got a satellite, I watched "The Graduate" on AMC and couldn't BELIEVE that it was only rated PG-13, now. To think what used to be objectionable a few decades ago, is now, nearly commonplace, is sickening.

TV is getting worse all the time. Why does sex have to be in every show. They don't know how to make clean family shows anymore. And we wonder why so many teens are having babies.

TV is so bad and keeps getting worse. What we watch is often reflected in our we act. God help us all.
TV is such a miracle machine, but the garbage that is put on is disgusting. A few shos like House, The Closer are okay.
What ever happened to Judging Amy, The Guardian. When did we allow horrible language, graphic violence and stupid constant sex on TV.

WORSE ,TRASH, GARBAGE, too much advertiseing-
of the 70 channels on my cable, I might watch 17
mostly sports and news, discovery, Pbs, history, weather,Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, food, Raymond reruns.

TV today is getting worse and worse. It's hard to change onto a channel without escaping from a reality show or game show. What happened to good quality TV? I'd rather watch DVDs than watch some stupid reality show.

After having scanned the MANY negative 'votes' on todays TV , it is a wonder that none of us are being heard. I am heartened by the fact that I am not the only one who feels this way about todays (mostly) useless television but wonder why then does it not change ? I heard 'rumors' before about a law(?) being passed where cable companys would have to let people CHOOSE what channels they wanted to 'rent'. Boy would THAT allow our voices to be heard !!

Television viewing, is a waste of time.
If you do find a show that is entertaining,
it is pulled for the ratings...while more and more
same type of shows stay on. BORING......
Who wants to watch reality,we should be living it!

Overall, it's getting worse. Most reality shows are of no interest to me or my family although my daughter enjoys watching dance contests. Enjoy CSI,NCIS,House and similar programs, really miss Crossing Jordan-taking that off the air was a BIG mistake! Love Monk! Greatly enjoy Discovery and History channels and Fox news. Need to get back to good, quality shows that the whole family can watch and enjoy (Carol Burnett Show, Everybody loves Raymond, Home Improvement, Magnum,P.I.,etc)

TV programs are by far getting worse. Not only have the programs become excruciating violent and the language foul, but also the explicit promotion of sex and the perversion of it makes one nauseated. You can't even sit down with the family and watch a decent program.
I'm ready to blow up my TV.

TV is getting worse, worse, worse.
Whoever invented the pop-up commercial during
programming should be shot at dawn. What an
intrusion. Notice that they don't do them during
commercials.
Speaking of commercials, they are getting longer
and dumber. Who would buy products from these
idiots?
There is not enough space here to air all my
complaints. Thanks for listening.

It is overwhelming to see that so many think TV is worse! Are the programming executives seeing this? We watch PBS almost exclusively. When I try out a new show on the networks, I find it either mindless, provocative, violent, or all of the above. What has happened to our nation, that we swallow this mediocrity and worse? It scares me. People that watch such TV with regularity show an emptiness of mind that is frightening. Such people could be so easily led by misguided or evil leadership. Even the news is vacuous. I am thankful for PBS and NPR. We utilize Netflix, which permits us to choose our entertainment wisely. We have no interest in having cable or a dish.

Disgusting, not worth the time of day or night...what is the problem with these people that they CANN'T understand all this trash on TV now??? even more, the people that actually pay for this junk?? the advertiser's and what world do they live in? NOT THE ONE DECENT PEOPLE LIVE IN..WITH VALUES, MORALS,( look the word up in the dictionary) AND CARE ABOUT WHAT THEIR FAMILY WATCH!!!!!!!!! BASICALLY IT SUCKS!!!!!!!

I am so glad you asked! TV is getting worse and worse. It's gotten so that I can't even allow my grandchildren to watch the commercials or the TV guide channel. It's nothing by sex and violence. The reality shows...not like any reality I know, or care to know. I refuse to increase the package with my cable. Why pay more money for more smut and junk. Even the Home and Garden channel is into reality challenges, which are a big joke. And, it's no longer much gardening, just decorating. And I have no desire to explain to my grandchildren what a 4 hour erection is! There is nothing but blood, guts, gore, violence and sex. If you want anything wholesome you have to watch the old shows. What happened to real writers who wrote material like MASH, Barney Miller, Taxi, Cheers and several others. There is enough doom and gloom in the world, I don't need to turn on the TV to see more. If it wasn't for sports I'd take all the TVs out of my house. And those I that I tape so I can get thru the commercials. Most of them have the opposite affect on me; because of the commercial I WON'T buy the product. The stupidty has to stop.

If we are all saying that TV has nothing to offer that most shows, from Reality TV to E, are worthless, that there is too much sex and violence on TV, then why does it continue? There must be at least TV exec out there with a brain that can read these posts and see that Americans do not want a continuation of this trash. Let's clean it up or shut it off. And shutting it off is what I am doing more and more.

If you are a 13 year old male with a fixation on female anatomy and "potty" humor then recent TV is for you. After all, you are the target audience. For the rest of us, TV is a mess with nothing but sex or blood. Maybe someday the advertisers will realize that the real disposable money is not in the hands of 13 year olds and when they do TV will change. Until then we are stuck with this filth.

I'm sure tired of disfunctional people on daytime and the evening shows are for the most part AWFUL. Why does the media think that the public just wants to see nudeity, boobs, and foul language to watch a show? Get a life!!! And for sure I'll have my TV off from now until after the election---don't need to see 30 political ads in one evening. I personally so NOT buy products advertised on the shows I don't like---and I don't like most primetime shows.
