Mena Suvari's latest movie is on Lifetime Saturday
Posted by Lorrie LynchIf you ever wondered what happened to Mena Suvari, who was the Hollywood “It” girl in 1999 for her dual roles in American Beauty and American Pie, you can catch up with her Saturday night in Lifetime’s true crime story Sex & Lies in Sin City (watch a preview of it, below). Suvari, whose father is a psychiatrist, is fascinated with crime. “If I hadn’t gotten into modeling, I probably would have studied psychology and might be working on a Ph.D. right now,” she says. A few years ago, Suvari planned to sign up for a forensics class at UCLA. When it was canceled, she called up the man who was going to teach it, the head of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s crime lab. “I asked him if he was going to offer the class somewhere else,” she says, “and then I asked if I could come down and meet him. He was taken aback because he didn’t know what the heck I was doing there, but he toured me around the lab. What’s hilarious is that I was so interested in his life, and all he wanted to talk about was what I do.” The two have since become friends. In Sex & Lies, Suvari plays beauty queen-turned-stripper Sandy Murphy, who gets involved with Las Vegas casino mogul Ted Binion (played by Matthew Modine). When Binion turns up dead, the key suspect is Murphy, the beneficiary of his will. “It’s a complicated, meaty role,” Suvari says. She has no interest in playing sweet girlfriends. “Looking innocent has only tormented me,” she says. “I don’t feel the way people see me, so it’s been a life challenge. I’m petite (5’4”). I think I’m attractive to some people. I have big blue eyes. So it’s like I’m young, I’m flippant, I’m vulnerable. I’m like, ‘NO! There’s so much more in there.’”
