Tell us: Are films today better or worse?

081012cover This weekend's cover story in the magazine is all about the biggest films coming out this winter. It's also a ton of fun, containing behind-the-scenes facts from each of the movies (be sure to check out all the extra stuff that didn't make it into the magazine), plus our interview with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx, who co-star in The Soloist. We think this winter's movies show a lot of promise, with Angelina Jolie already getting awards buzz for her role in Changeling, Oliver Stone's W. already getting people talking and  the latest James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, sure to be a hearty helping of action.

But forget what we think about these movies or others. It's your turn. Tell us what you think about films today: Are they better or worse? Let us know in the comments below.

The movies are fine, I suppose, but I find it incredibly irritating when I can't hear the dialog because the "background" music is so over-powering. I hope it’s just trendy at the moment, and that film makers will soon figure out that the dialog is essential to the plot, and that good dialog need not be buried, or take a back seat to the composer's contribution to the movie.

Chicago, The Pianist, Schindlers List, Forrest Gump were about the only worth while movies I have seen. TOO MUCH sex, violence, profanity. Can porno be any different then most of these film? Even Munich had unnessary sex scenes. Are there any films that can be watched as a family? Background music is so incredibly loud I cannot hear the actors speak. Car chases are so over done, sick of it all. How about a good story line? I would rather read a good book, which I do daily. Movies cost so much to make and all it is but garbage.

Todays movies are mostly TRASH. Vulgar language,
full of cheap sex no ROMANCE . Violence-loud music very few ACTORS that have TALENT Everyone looks alike Females built like 12 year old boys. Guys look like WIMPS. What ever happened to A female that looks like Rita Hayworth or Ingred Bergman. Men like Cary Grant hard to find in todays hollywood.
My husband and I would like to go to the movies but very few we want to see. We did go to FLASH OF GENIUS it is VERY GOOD.

There has always been good and bad movies. It depends on the person who is watching but when you see a movie you must take it as it is. And to say that Hollywood has no more real talent would be a crime to say. Yes, Hollywood actors get paid alot but when you see them in a movie they are someone else not a celebrite. In the recent months that have pasted and are to come there have been many powerful performances. From Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker to Keira Knightley' s role as the Duchess to the soon released role of Angelina Jolie in the Changeling to Robert Downey Jr 's performance in the Soloist there is still great talent in Hollywood like Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. You just have to know where to find it.

Movies of today seem mostly to be made to promote
a liberal ideology and make us mistrust our institutions. The police are always crooked. Religion is for misguided and or very stupid people. Our government is the cause of all the trouble around the world. Our solders are drug addicted killers and conservatives and christians are the most horrible of the lot. On top of that you add the vulgar language, too much sex and violence, I would rather stay home with a good book.

I think movies today are just as good as the movie industry has for the most part been since silent films were first made. And I think there are enough films in theaters, TV and straight to DVD that people of all walks of life can find a good movie that fits their morals. If you don't want to hear the f-word, you should pay attention to a movie's rating and its theme. A rated R action flic will most likely have lots of cusing and lots of blood and guts. If anything, we nearly have too much choice. For that, movies are much better. I think there are very smart writers producing thrillers are actually thrilling, and some horror movies are actually scary and comedies that are truly funny. And, I for one do think we are starting to see the more of the so-called "everyman(woman)" in movies and television. Anyone watch "Boston Legal?" Anyone watch "Worst Week Ever?" or "House" or at the movies watched anything with Jack Black? Even our new Bond, James, Bond star - OK he's very buff - but his face isn't much to look at. However he is probably the best James Bond I've ever watched. I for one think movies are getting not just better, but smarter.

Looks like it's all been said by others. Seems to me most screen writers today only know one word and it starts with an 'F'. If all your friends talk that way I feel sorry for them.
Open your dictionary and try some new words.
My wife and I rent our movies and when the 'F bombs', as they have been described, come too often we turn it off.

I find that many films today are wonderfully thought provoking and well done. One of my major criticizms, though, is that there are not enough actors of different shapes, sizes, ages, color and ethnicity in all films. I don't care if these actors aren't necessarily the main characters..., I want to go into a theater where we ALL can connect with a good film because we possibly see someone in that film who looks like or reminds us of our color, shape, size, etc. in the human piece of the American pie. I am including everything from children's movies to "G rated old people" movies. (I'm old.)

I must admitt, I was pleasantly surprised at how many people have responded to this survey with good, common sense. I don't usually go to movies, but from the previews I've seen on TV, they don't look like anything I'd care to see or spend my money on either.

My husband and I did, however, go to a movie just last week.....first time in probably 10 or 12 years. The movie was "Fireproof", and it was a WONDERFUL movie. I would encourage everyone to see it. The storyline is about adult relationships, but it's suitable for all ages. It's a story about a troubled marriage, but includes drama, humor and inspirational insights as well. Go to "fireproofthemovie.com" to see a clip of the movie, and read about its production by Sherwood Pictures. I was especially impressed with Kirk Cameron (male lead)and his commitment to his own wife that he will not kiss anyone else in his movie-making career. Sherwood Pictures flew Kirk's wife to the filming sight so that she could step into a silhouette shot at the end of the film when the couple kiss and "make up". It's a great movie. Let's all support something that's truly worthwhile.

Movies of today are usually too violent, have nudity or sexual scenes that are not necessary. Most lack substance. Whay do we need movies with kidnappings, killing, terror, etc. There is nothing wrong a good thriller, adventure or suspense movie, but alot of it is not needed. Most of The PG-13 m0vies of today should be R and the R should be NC-17. I realize that historical or war movies require a ceratin amount of violence, but some do not require such graphics.
I really enjoy the family movies I watch with my 9 and 5 year old. I do have favorites that fall into the war category though.

The majority of films today are either too violent, too much filthy language, or too much sex. In spite of the ratings, our teens and preteens are seeing these films through rentals. The content of these films DO have a negative impact on kids and adults. Even when a good film comes out and sells, Hollywood doesn't get the idea that we would like more decent films. As an adult, I do not pay my money for anything but a film that tells a true story, makes me laugh, or truly has something good to say. Please listen Hollywood.

Movies today are disgustingly puerile, stuffed with inane dialogue, car chases, far too much obscenity, and sound tracks that overwhelm the dialog. Car chases and shootouts have nothing to do with plot, and plots are seriously lacking in the dreck we're presented in films these days.

I just saw "Burn After Reading". It had excellent actors that I really like, great storyline and could have been a great movie. However, the language totally spoiled it. The use of the "f" word over and over again ruined the whole movie. No recommendation to go see this movie from me or my friends.

Don't the writers realize that the shock value of all the sex, bad language, background music so loud that a person can't hear the dialogue is gone.

Many people are staying away from what could be good entertainment.

I love movies. Fantasy or otherwise. One question I would like answered. Why is the music so loud that you cannot hear some of the dialogue? It just bugs me when I miss out on what is being said.

Whoa, I guess it's unanimous. Nobody likes the quality of the movies today. And who can blame them? Nothing but the darker side of humanity shown, week after week. Vulgar language, vivid sex scenes, insipid dialogue, no story line and stupid plot. So what draws me week after week? The hope that once in a while there's a gem--just waiting for my imagination to catch fire. Where are the writers, pray tell? Where are they? Don't tell me... sitting at a table in a group, writing away until the heart of the movie is gone and nobody gives a fig.... Sad.

I firmly believe movies/tv are much worse than previous. I find nothing I really want to watch and up-coming films all show so much violence and sex that I have no desire to see them. I will add that G-rated films with Christian morals mean so much more and I would not hesitate to watch them. Otherwise I could just keep the tv off.

Young people at work do not attend movies. The TV on in the employee lounge is always turned to TV Land by YOUNG PEOPLE! Only parents who need a babysitter drop Jr High kids off at movies - kids don't watch - it's a social gathering only. We don't want to watch movies where Hollywood "teaches and preaches" because their values are so low and scummy. If photographers and columnists stopped chasing "celebrities" they would not be famous because THE PUBLIC DOES NOT CARE about those people who would love to bring our country down to the 3rd world level. The Emperor has No Clothes.

Most of the movies of today are full of sex, vulgarity, lies, violence, drugs; etc. You can't even hardly find a decent tv show anymore. Everything they make now is either full of all the above or I'm sorry to say but full of language that is something other than english(slang, rap, etc;). We need more shows like we had in the 50's to the 80's. And please stop making remakes that are totally different from the original show or movie. The film industry needs to remember that not everyone is 15-30 these days; nor are we rappers, gang bangers, drug crazed idiots; etc. And no I am not trying to put anyone down and everyone is entitled to watch what they want to watch; I am just saying it would be nice if some of us actually had something worth watching.

The Films of yesterday were better in sound &unstanding the actors when they spoke in the film.
Today films are to dark. the sound is bad (you can't understand the actors when they speak in the film. The background music & sound effects are so loud you can't understand the actors in the film.

Today's movies are terrible - full of "language", guns, violence, tough talk, low morals, unattractive characters and weak plots that bear no resenblance to real life. No movie has been made in the last 15 years to compare to "The Best Years of Our Lives" from 1949. Is there a Judy Garland in show business today? Cary Grant? Audrey Hepburn? I have the impression that today's movie stars are looking for money, having fun and craziness and and that a love for movies, show business and the crafts of acting, dancing, and singing are lost.

Movies today are much worse & lack plots, meaningful dialog, & consist mainly of not too good special effects

Movies today are nothing but trash. They insult my intelligence. They are either so stupid or just filled with filth. The movies I have enjoyed are: "The Shawshank Redemption" , "Forrest Gump" , "Pretty Woman", and "The Sound of Music" to name a few different types.

Posted by: Deb Johnson | Oct 12, 2008 6:46:57 PM | Flag as abusive

today's movies are trite, formulaic, shallow and predictable. Usually there is a high probability that a 'message' re: racism, Republicans and Southerners will be slipped in,whether relevant to the story line or not. Unnecessary nudity and sex, bodily noises and everybody uses the expltive "--- damn". This is very strange since I don't know anyone who uses that expression, and I'm an ER Nurse! The technical aspects are very good, but how about a good story line; and how about useing some intelligent actors for a change. My husband and I love movies, but are forced to TCM, and the best of all reading.

Most movies today are awful and very few of the so-called "stars" can act. Years ago you had stars, directors and producers that knew how to make a good film without making it filthy. The movies today reflect the morals of most of Hollywood and, as a result, are not worth paying good money to see. Maybe if main street America stops supporting the left-leaning, liberal crowd they will start finding some good stars and stories.

the movies today are way worse than the movies of old. the reason to me has to do with the pg13 rating. it seems like nowadays, you can get more cussing, sex, and voilence on regular television with desparate housewives, law and order, etc. back in the day, we had rated R and the movies were great! people need to keep in mind that movies need to be entertaining. no movie about someone's life should be pg13! thats not even possible. but they look at all the dollar signs and breaking records with sales and they dont want to exclude anyone from buying a ticket. so they dumb down the content to make a few extra bucks. but the result is a so so movie. the movies that take the bigest hit on this are the scary movies. no one has made a REALLY good scary movie in at least 10 years! the halloween's, cujo's, psyco's, shinings, omen's, and candyman's of the worlds are extinct. thank god for no country for old men and there will be blood or i wouldnt have made it to the movies at all last year! this last batman movie was pretty good too.
