Hugh Jackman on sexy men and 'Australia'

Hughkidman Hugh Jackman is definitely having a moment. You've seen him on the cover of People magazine as Sexiest Man of the Year, and now he's the sexiest man of Australia, the epic movie in which he stars with Nicole Kidman (at left).
Our Nancy Mills says Jackman is too modest to agree on the sexiest man title.  “I never thought it would happen to me, and my mates never thought it would either,” the 6-foot-2-plus actor told journalists assembled in Los Angeles to hear Jackman talk about the rigors of making  the movie.  “My eight-year-old son Oscar said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’” Jackson, 40, reported, not quite stifling a smile. “We ran a very strong campaign,” he added jokingly.  “I was the first one to run a negative campaign. I wanted to bring Matt Damon, George Clooney and Matthew McConaughey down to size.”  (Damon won last year, Clooney has won it twice—1997 and 2006 — and McConaughey once, in 2005.)
Campaigner or not, Jackman's muscled physique is evident in Australia, an epic romantic adventure set at the brink of World War 2. He's  wrangling cattle, taking an outdoor shower and riding horseback across hundreds of miles of desolate territory.  “In the script, there’s a scene that says, ‘The Drover (his character) thunders across the Outback, grabs a beast, wrestles it to the ground, pulls out his knife and slashes his balls off,’” Jackman said.  “That’s when I realized I needed some riding lessons.”

To build up his strength, Jackman  worked out with weights on the set and ate a lot of steamed chicken.  “A protein diet is pretty much what drovers lived on,” he said.  “They were lean and strong.”

The Drover also has a tender side.  In one scene, he wears a white dinner jacket to romance Kidman.  In another, he takes dancing lessons from her under a baobab tree.  “Baz (director Baz Luhrmann) quite likes sunsets and kissing,” Jackman explained, “so Nic and I ended up kissing quite a lot.  It’s never comfortable making out in front of 70 people.  Nic and I talked about it.  We needed to show passion and heat between us.  Sometimes if you know someone too well, the heat goes out the window.”

Apparently that didn’t happen, even though Jackman has known Kidman since 1995, when he began dating his future wife, actress Deborra-Lee Furness. Furness and Kidman were once roommates, and their friendship has continued over the years.  “When I saw ‘Australia’ for the first time, I was sitting next to my wife,” Jackman said.  “After Deb saw our first kiss, which was a long, lingering, slow kiss, she leaned over and said, ‘That was great!’

“It was amazing to me to kiss someone where I didn’t have to have my shoes off or stand in a ditch or have someone standing on a box.”  Kidman is 5-feet-10 ½.

Next up for Jackman is X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a spin-off from his popular X-Men films, which opens in May. “There’s not as much kissing in that one,” he jokes. “I did miss Halle Berry.”
