Who should play Michelle Obama in the movies?

Cover_thumb When it comes to movie stars, they don't get much bigger than Will Smith. Be sure to check out our Dennis McCafferty's cover story on the I Am Legend and Independence Day star in this weekend's issue, in which Smith talks about his new drama, Seven Pounds (in theaters next Friday), as well as possibly playing President-elect Barack Obama on the big screen one day. Click read more below for some extra tidbits from Dennis' interview and a Seven Pounds trailer, and then tell us: Who do you think should play soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama in a movie?

Smith is as charming and gregarious in person as you’d expect. Nothing seems to rattle him. Take, for example, working with Seven Pounds director Gabriele Muccino. Muccino does not speak English! But, as he often does, Smith speaks of this as an advantage, not a disadvantage, as an actor. "The language barrier is a fantastic gift, actually," he told me. “This way, the two of us connect strictly by emotion. I’m attempting to feel what he’s trying to communicate to me, without words. Sometimes, he’ll scream, or lay down on the floor, or try something else that’s extreme to get his point across. It’s childlike and bizarre and wonderful — much more clearer to me than using words."

We spoke just days after the election and Smith was clearly on top of the world. In fact, he told me he ran right out after Obama was elected and bought a new American flag for his home. "I’ve always flown the flag proudly at our house," Smith admits. "But it was time to get a new one, because this was a historic moment that validated something I always believed: That neither hate nor negativity nor racism could break the foundation of ideals that created America. This election proved what I’ve always held as true."

There's this show, it's a reality show on Soapnet. It's called, Southern Belles. Anyway, there's a tall, sophisticated, lady of color on the show named, Julie. She's a model, but not the flashy kind. Anyway, I think she is sort of like Michelle Obama. They even sound similar. She'd be a breath of fresh air on the big screen. It seems like we see the same folks all the time. I'd like to see someone else get a big break. I believe she could do it, it looks like a natural role for her. She's perfect to play Michelle Obama. Check her out on Southern Belles and you'll see what I mean.

Other than that, if Hollywood wants to go with the same folks we've been seeing for a long time already now...Kimberly Elise would be a good choice. She's a genuine actress, yet she isn't talked about as much as she should be. She was the star in Diary of a Mad Black woman.

Other than those two, there is no other choice.

My vote would go to Renee Goldsberry as well. I can definitely see her playing that part.

I think either Regina King, Robin Givens, or Saundra Quarterman should portray as Michelle Obama. Saundra Quarterman favors Michelle Obama more. Harry Lennix should portray as Barack Obama because he resembles him. Lisa Goldstein, the woman who played Millicent Huxtable on "One Tree Hill", could portray as Sarah Palin and she looks like her.

I think for once, it would be so much more interesting to find an unknown actress who not only has great acting chops but also looks like Michelle Obama! Why do we always have to see the same usual suspects (Halle, Angela, Gabrielle, Regina and now Taraji) playing every single part?? Box office draw is no excuse! If the movie is well made and compelling, it will not one dime at the box office if the actress who plays Michelle is an unknown and paired with a 'known' actor playing Barack (i.e. Harry Lennix who is the closest resemblance but...Will gets what Will wants! Note to any filmmaker thinking about doing a feature on The Obamas: Find an unknown matched with a known to create the next classic romance film!!!

I love Will Smith.... but he cannot "act" like Obama. Harry Lennix is a dead ringer and handle Obama's mannerisms and voice tone. As for Michelle, many actresses "look" like her, but Regina King is the best choice. She has the look as well as the acting muscle. She has a very strong character that cannot be compared or matched with any other actress, not Gabriel, not Halle, not anyone. Will could play a young Obama, but that's as far as he should go. Casting anyone else would be a great tragedy and a joke, like Beyonce as Etta James.

If I had my choice, I would look at Renee Elise Goldsberry or Kimberly Elise. As for someone stating that Cindy McCain is beautiful; I would say please.

I think Regina King would make a good Michelle Obama. As for the comments about the way Michelle looks, that is irrelevant. The question was who should play her in a movie, not the way she looks. She is an attractive woman. Stop being so negative. She probably looks better than you. I know she's way more intelligent than you are. An educated person would not have made such a horrible comment.

I think Taraji P Henson or Kimberly Elise should play. Taraji P Henson is most popular right now.

Tichina Arnold the mother from Everybody Hates Chris should play Michelle.

I put my vote for Renee Goldsberry as well. Renee is a gem of an actress and would sparkle in the role, as she does in anything she touches.

As much i love will obama should most definetly be played by Harry Lennix.

He is the best fit. the best voice, demeanor, physical attributes and stong confidence during his acting ventures.

regina king as michelle is perfect too. no doubt about that!

I have read with great interest the list of female actresses suggested to play Michelle Obama. There were some great names listed but none would capture the spirit of Michelle. They would change Michelle into who we already know these actresses to be. The only actress that I know have the spirit of Michelle Obama and could create that spirit in look and style on the screen is Renee Elise Goldsberry. Renee played the amazing Evangeline Williamson on One Life to Live and won 2 Emmy nominations for her role. Also, she starred in "All About You" and has played many other on TV. She has what it takes to become Michelle Obama on the screen and looks more like her than any of the other actresses mentioned. Check her out and you will quickly see what I mean.

By the way, amuzing isn't a word. Stupid moron.

You're blind. Manchelle Obama couldn't wipe Cindy McCain's rear. Cindy McCain is beautiful - and a doctor. Manchelle is a fat, ugly race-baiter. It has nothing to do with Oprah's purchase of the Presidency, it simply plain to see. If you can see.
