Nick Jonas' mom talks about his diabetes

Denise Jonas, mom to Jonas Brothers Kevin, 21, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16, has more than the usual worries when her sons — the hottest boy band in the country — are on the road, as they are now promoting their new 3-D movie. Nick, the one "everyone counts on to be the adult," was diagnosed at 13 with Type 1 diabetes (previously known as juvenile diabetes) and he wears an insulin pump to regulate his blood sugar.

Our Reyhaneh Fathieh talked to Denise Jonas about Nick's diagnosis for a piece in the magazine this weekend.  “I noticed he wasn’t himself at all," she says."He was listless and irritable. I chalked it up to puberty. But I was really alarmed at his weight loss. I remember him buying this pair of acid-washed girl jeans, and they were falling off him. He lost 15 pounds in two weeks.”

They soon learned that Nick’s blood sugar was close to 800 (normal range is 70 to 140.)  Nick asked,"Am I going to die?" His mom says, "He broke down in tears, which is unlike Nick." But they got things under control fast. Kevin and Joe had to be trained  to do things like give Nick insulin shots, or test his blood sugar, because they, not mom, would travel with him.  Now, Nick has learned how to manage his diabetes. "He always has apple juice next to him on stage and backstage he has fruit snacks,” she says.

Hear the new radio PSA that the Jonas Brothers and mom will unveil nationally Monday by clicking on the audio below.

I just wanted to thank Nick for being there through my battle against Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed March 14th, 2008 at the age of 11. I will be 14 in May and I am SO happy with what Nick is doing. i think it's wonderful and just completely amaizing what he is doing about Diabetes, and helping other kids who have Diabetes! He really helped me out a lot. It was a rough time for me my family & friends ... especailly my BFF Cassandra. I think it's kewl to have Nick Jonas as a role model for me and other kids also. He is my inspiration to keep moving forward and to NEVER let it slow me down!! Nick I love you with all my heart! Your smile, your eyes, your everything. You mean the World to me, and there will always be a place for you in my heart, NO MATTER WHAT!! I love you.

Hey Nick I have no idea if you will ever even see this. I am a mom of a child with type 1 and I can't begin to tell you how special it is for her to see someone like you with the same disease. She is the only person at her school with diabetes. She is amazing and never complains, but I am sure must feel different. When someone special like you is out there, it makes others more aware. I know she feels lucky to have diabetes because she has something in common with you that her other friends do not have. Thanks so much for going public! Her sister and her are going to your concert in Tacoma, WA in June 2009. Any chance of meeting you backstage?? A diabetes friend guitar pick is her current life dream! Keep up the good work!

My daughter was diagnosed at age 7 (October 25, 2008) I had no idea what the "symptoms" were. I just knew that it was driving us crazy that she was literally drinking almost a gallon of water a night and of course, followed by a zillion trips to the bathroom. All I would say to her was "Stop drinking so much water in the middle of the night and you won't be running to the bathroom all the time". of course, I had no idea and felt horrible once I found out. When we rushed her to the hospital from the pediatricians office who immediatly determined what it was, while we were waiting for her to be admitted, she was so scared and she had no idea what was happening, my husband arrived and said to her "So, you love Nick Jonas so much that you had to get diabetes like him"
And that was all it took. Her face lit up, and she said "If he can do this, than I can do it". I don't know Nick Jonas, I do not know his family, but whoever he is, I love him for helping my daughter accept this and be "ok" with it. Brave kid he is!
