USA WEEKEND brings swimsuit models to NASCAR

Cover_thumbThis weekend's Fabulous February cover story brings together two American institutions — NASCAR and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition — for the first time. For our exclusive cover story, photo shoot and inside-the-magazine poster, we invited three of NASCAR's biggest name drivers — Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr. — and two top swimsuit models — Brooklyn Decker and Julie Henderson — to pose for famed SI photographer Walter Iooss Jr. at the Richard Petty Driving Experience in Concord, N.C. (Find out what newspaper near you carries USA WEEKEND with this list.) Check out a slideshow of photos from the shoot taken by our senior photo editor, David Baratz, and click read more below for some on-set scoop from senior writer Dennis McCafferty. You'll also find a time-lapse video that shows you how many people it really takes to make a photo shoot successful.

For the kind of major production this was — a big set, different set-ups, one of the models brought her high-profile fiance, tennis star Andy Roddick — the whole vibe at the shoot was relaxed and casual, our Dennis reports. The drivers, who are typically pressed for time because of their obligations and sponsor commitments, were just in "hanging out" mode. Dale Jr. playfully ribbed his pal, Clint Bowyer, as Bowyer changed sponsors this year from Jack Daniels to Cheerios. "I’m proud of you!" Junior told him. "You’re going from the barrel to the bowl, I see."

Roddick just sat quietly reading magazines, being very polite and friendly when asked if he wanted anything. In between shots, his fiance, Brooklyn, gave him a sweet hug. You could tell he was only there to support her. Not to "watch over her" or anything like that.

As for the famed Walter Iooss? A total pro. Some photographers of his stature would attempt to play God for the shoot, dictating a "vision" and  demanding all the time in the world to achieve it. But Walter isn’t that way. He knew the drivers were on a tight schedule, and he went through each setup in efficient but effective fashion, engaging them along the way. You could see why he gets to the subjects of his lens so skillfully.

Well, I see that there a few cry-baby's on here. "To exploit and objectify women", how lame can you get!

If these women didn't want to be "exploited", they wouldn't have been models in the first place!

I, for one, love the female form and I see no exploitation. Show's the poor taste of some people who are nothing more than religious zealots and who want everything to be P.C.(politically correct). To them, I say, "Lighten Up!"

Life is too short not to enjoy it and I love nothing more than a attractive woman who is blessed to have a beautiful body and isn't afraid to show it off.

I love that SI and Nascar teamed up for this. All the publicity will be great for NASCAR. Of course I love the drivers, especially Dale Jr. LOL

How tacky can you be NASCAR? You will grab at anything for publicity. Reminds of WWF wrestling, fluff and fake.

What a marketing ploy?! Sports Illustrated could care less about Nascar, but they will use you guys to continue to exploit and objectify women.

This would have been more interesting if it were the guys of Nascar "From Speed to Spedo"! HA!

TACKY

Sorry but I think they could have picked a better picture. There was one picture where the men looked macho and the girls looked like they were from junior high. Another pic where the women looked hot but the men looked stupid. Could we not find one that put macho and hot together? The cover is just ok.
