Vote for your favorite writer: King, Rowling or Meyer
Posted by USA WEEKEND
We started an Internet firestorm last month when we excerpted here on the blog part of this weekend's magazine interview with Stephen King. The best-selling author talked about Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, saying of Meyer that she "can't write worth a darn." No surprise, King's comment went viral, and some 1,600 blog readers shared definite opinions on which of the three pop fiction writers is the best. Today, I want to put it to a vote. Click on the ballot below to tell us who you think is the best writer: King, who has written more than 60 books and scared the wits out of us for 35 years; Rowling, whose series about a boy wizard got young people raised in the computer age turning page after page; or Meyer, whose vampire romance series is seen as publishing's next big thing. After you vote, feel free to tell us why you chose your favorite in the comment section below.

Stephen King is the Master of Modern Horror.
J.K. Rowling created a whole new part of the world and filled it with exciting characters.
Stephanie Meyer ruined two classic horror villains by turning them into mundane angsty teenagers.

I voted Stephen King, he's an amazing author, and in my opinion, he knows how to write a scary book, and Pet Cemetary is definatly the scariest and best book I've read.
On the other hand, I did try to read JK. Rowlings Harry Potter books, but I couldn't even get into the first one. So I think she's the worst out of the three, but she definatly has a good imagination and I wish her all the best. Now,
Stephanie Meyer... I think the charicters in Twilight are portrayed as being too perfect, however, I found the books and film enjoyable. It doesn't change the fact, the majourity of Twilight fans are those girls who are lacking life experience, or wihout a relationship, or in an unhappy relationship. In a nutshell, her books would be much better if the charicters had some imperfections.
I'm sure all of these authors are good, however, Stephen King, in my opinion, is the best.
Stephen King gets my vote, because he's the best of this awful bunch. With Stephen, at least your characters aren't a bunch of irritating butthurt children crying, moaning, and creating a seemingly endless amount of drama. They are all, however, bottom rung authors in my opinion. How much Deus Ex Machina do you need per-book before you ask yourself whether or not these authors even PLAN their plot? J. K. Rowling had plot contradictions in her very first book, and a complete lack of rational, logical thought leaving plot-holes you could drive a truck through. I was never really a fan of Stephen King's writing style so I'll let that one lie. The less said about Stephanie Meyer the better, as she is an utterly loathsome cretin. Dan Brown is also an overrated charlatan, and I think he deserves his place on this list.
But even still, I have nothing but the best wishes for all three. It is not really their fault they cannot write; their ineptitude is only reinforced by the millions of copies sold to the mouth-breathers who enjoy them. It's really the fault of the publishers who WANT us to have an endless amount of completely retarded 'entertainment', until we all choke to death on our own blissful mindless vapidity.
WHY is Stephenie-what's-her-face even one of the options?!
EW.
Srsly.
Smiles,
"I think it is the sweetness and virtue of the Twilight series that resonates in the hearts of the fans. I'm glad that good clean and uplifting literature can and has become so popular. It speaks well of our societies."
Oh, please. Am I the only one who noticed that Bella was gagging for it throughout the entire series?
And the reason they didn't have sex was not "sweetness and virtue". It was because it would result in death. It wasn't like they made some kind of moral decision.
sorry about the spelling errors.
I voted King, and to all of yu retarded Twitards Count Chocula's more vampire than that retard of a character you call Edward will ever be, and Twilight was like a fanfic... A bad fanfic seriously Stephenie Myer blows.
I voted for King because he is, and always will be one of the greatest writers in modern literature. Note that I said one of the greatest. However, Rowling does write pretty well, Rowling is far from great, but is a good writer. Meyer on the other hand is terrible and has the writing skills similar to the drawing skills of a 16-year old asspie on deviant art.
Stephan King is a god. No, wait, my mistake. Stephan King IS God. Praise Him!
I read all of the Harry Potter books, and enjoyed them immensely. On the other hand, I've only read a few of Stephan King's novels. I liked the book Rose Madder more than I liked all the Harry Potter books combined! I won't even try comparing Smeyer to either of them. That would be insulting. Smeyer needs to GTFO. Her books belong on Fanfiction.net.
I think I'm going to read Rose Madder again.
I'm saddened and disappointed to read such crude critiques of Stephenie Meyer's books. Especially considering that her success has come so innocently. Her initial writings were not an attempt at a career as an author. I don't care for horror material, so I have steered away from Stephen King's books. I do want to say that I think he is very talented. My teenage daughter introduced me Harry Potter and Twilight. I have watched the Harry Potter movies and read the Twilight books and seen the movie. Both are inspiring. I am awed by J.K. Rowling's creativity, talent and intellect. I think that it is the sweetness and virtue of the Twilight series that resonates in the hearts of the fans. I'm glad that good clean and uplifting literature can and has become so popular. It speaks well of our societies.
Please.
I am not particularly a fan of Stephen King, but I can still admit he is a fantastic author. J.K. Rowling is my personnal favorite, and I really fell in love with her characters and the awesome plot full of twists and surprises. Meyer honestly cannot write properly. It's as simple as that. She's a like a glorified fanfiction writer, and not a very good one. I really don't understand why her serie got so popular...oh, of course. Young teenage girls who fell in love with the romance between a two-dimensional principal character and a ''perfect'' vampire. And don't get me started on what message she's sending to all these young girls with that thing about looks being pretty much all that matters that she's got going on...
I vote for King, He's had so many years of experience, which can't compare to Rowling nor to Meyer. King as wrote more novels than both of the other two women, and has won more awards than both of them put together, he's written truly chilling novels, unlike the crap those two write. Let's face it. King's way of writing is god-like.
Twilight sucks.
Compare a masterpiece like Carrie to glorified fanfiction like Twilight.
You really can't compare the two. There's just no contest. Because King didn't base his novel on a wet dream he had. Oh, and he researched the subject matter, and didn't have to use a thesaurus to alter his adjectives.
@Danielle:
"And finally, i don't think people should be calling her books trash or english-fail in their comments,"
They really are. The plotline falls apart around book two and then stephanie moves into this annoying kid drama of breaking up but still liking him anyways.
Lets just say that when an author comes out and admits to wanting to be the main char in this book you get what is called Mary Sue-ism. Meaning that the plot line no longer has a basis in logic but becomes nothing more than the wish fulfillment dream of an author. Stephen King can actually write a book (Even his more messed up ones) and have a cohesive plot line from beginning to ending.
have you ever read one of those harlequin Novels they sell at Wal-Mart?
Stephanie Meyers books...I mean train wrecks read JUST LIKE THOSE.
I mean, you want a GOOD vampire romance book with a smart story? Read Charline Harris' Novels of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels (Aka True Blood) You want well written? Thats your ticket. It is a true exploration not only into romance in vampire terms but an interesting expose into socio political/religious views into the whole what if scenario.
Also, besides being telepathic, Sookies character is exceedingly normal. If a bit slow by other standards. Pretty much what you expect a southern belle to be in a modern sense.
I voted for Stephen King as he knows how to write a vampire novel without turning it into a poofy romance.
I have read books by them all, and i have to admit, liked Stephenie Meyer's books the best, i read them over and over again and never get bored of them. I absolutely LOVE her books, Well done Stephenie. And finally, i don't think people should be calling her books trash or english-fail in their comments, i know it's your personal opinions but why can't you just say you don't like them, and say why you don't. Rather than offending??? No offense ;D
@glenda:
Her name is spelled Stephenie, therefore they have the first seven letters in common.
@mary sue swan:
I never said people have to like her and that they couldn't say that they don't on here. I just said why are so many of you so rude. And I didn't say everyone who doesn't like her is jealous. I just said some people are, and it is true. So you need to back the heck off.
By the way, my name is Lizzy Dalley. That comment was really rude and immature. I'm not ragging on your name, although I could.
@ Lizzy*Dalley*: first of all, do you really want people to take you seriously with that nickname? Come on!
Second, so you're entitled to insult everyone who doesn't lick SMeyer's precious a$$, yet the rest of people can't say they don't like it? Does the phrase "freedom of speech" ring a bell? No? I guessed so.
Third, well, no, I am not jealous. Why should I be jealous of her and not of Stephen King and J. K. Rowling, who have selled so many more copies of their books and can actually write?
Oh, yes, I get it now. I'm jealous because my only target in life is marrying a sparkly, controlling, abusive joke of a vampire who nullifies my (inexistant) willpower. Together we'll have a demon spawn we'll name specifically so that she is laughed at wherever she goes and, when she's merely 7 mentally, she will end up being shagged by these old friend of mine who had the hots for me but fell desperately in love with her the moment she saw her sexy newborn body. But don't fret, it's not paedophilia, but imprinting!
Do most of you people, most of you being adults, have seriously nothing better to do than bash Mrs. Meyer and the TwiSaga? I mean, WTR?! Get a life. It's fine that you have your own opinion but come on, people! Besides, some of you are probably just jealous of her fame, have tried to write a book and been shot down by friends, family, publishers, agents, etc. Whatever the reason may be, you do not need to be so rude.
Oh my God?! Is This article really serious about the topic? HOW DARE YOU TO COMPARE KING`S POWERFULL WRITING AND ROWLINGS FANTASY WORKS WITH SOME "ENGLISH-FAIL" LIKE meyer?
I mean, seriously, meyer overuses a lot of adverbs and has a lot of horrible gramatical errors i have ever read in my life (besides a kinder garden writing)
But well, the teen girls fall in love with everything that is "cute or hot"........pfff what do they know about love anyway?
I can't believe Twilight is such a big hit. I mean, look at the message it's sending to young kids!
It's okay to almost create suicide when your boyfriend left, it's okay to get pregnant at such a young age, it's okay to ignore everyone and treat them like dirt when your significant other has left. Does SMeyer want her fans to do all these things? I mean, next thing you know, the news will have special reports of young girls throwing themselves off the cliff due to their boyfriends leaving them.
Plus, there is no plot in Twilight. I mean, the plot usually comes in towards the end of the novel. Pretty much, you can skip 80% of the book and finally come to the plot at the last 20%.
I loved it when Damon from The Vampire Diaries said a wonderful comment about Twilight from the latest episode. It seems the writers of that show don't seem to like the series. :)
