Comic-Con movies: 'New Moon,' 'Iron Man' and more
Posted by Lorrie Lynch
She’s in the highest-earning movie of the year so far, so it makes sense that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Megan Fox will be a major deal at this year’s Comic-Con. However, the films everyone will be talking about are those that haven't been seen yet and we're betting New Moon, the Twilight sequel; Iron Man 2, the next cinematic chapter for Robert Downey Jr.’s high-tech hero; and James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar will be THE ones to see. Brian Truitt has those on his list, as well as a few others, so click read more for a preview as well as photos of the animated hero of Astro Boy, Taylor Lautner's Jacob from New Moon, and Fox in Jennifer’s Body (check out that trailer below).

A year ago, no one knew who the heck Taylor Lautner was, and Robert Pattinson was just some British guy from the fourth Harry Potter movie. Then thousands of fans of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series descended on Comic-Con for a peek at the movie, and the rest is history. This year, Lautner and Pattinson are in New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz. No word on whether the hot young stars will be at Comic-Con but new footage from the November release will be shown. Keep tuned into the blog and my Twitter feed for updates.
The Iron Man 2 panel may include its star, Downey (we know he will be there also touting Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes), and director Jon Favreau but the question is whether we see Scarlett Johansson (who plays the sleek and sexy Black Widow) or Mickey Rourke (the villainous Whiplash)? No word yet. But Iron fans may be more interested in seeing scenes from the film. The same thing may be true for Avatar: No one’s seen anything from that movie either, but James Cameron will be there with stars Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana to give fans a peek.
The previously mentioned Megan Fox will promote two movies. On a panel discussion for Jonah Hex, based on the disfigured comic book outlaw, she’ll appear with star Josh Brolin. Fox will also take part in a special presentation for press of the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody’s follow-up to Juno. In that, Fox stars as a high school cheerleader who gets possessed by a demon and starts killing all the boys in town.
Horror and sci-fi fans are also looking forward to seeing what the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street is all about — specifically how the new Freddy Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley, looks in scare-inducing makeup; a preview of the Biblically tinged Legion, starring Paul Bettany as the archangel Michael; and District 9, the alien drama produced by Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson. (Jackson and Cameron will also be doing a future of filmmaking panel together.)
Comic-Con is full of family-friendly movies. The animated Astro Boy, created by Japanese manga artist Osamu Tezuka, has actors Freddie Highmore and Kristen Bell talking about the story of the young robot with superhuman abilities. Disney will have the first-ever 3D panel at Comic-Con, and the company will feature three ambitious titles: Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, who will be there; the long-awaited Tron sequel, 27 years after the original’s release; and Disney’s A Christmas Carol, Robert Zemickis’ performance-capture version of the classic with Jim Carrey playing four different roles.
Other movies of note: the Woody Harrelson zombie comedy, Zombieland; 2012; Kick-Ass, starring Nicolas Cage and based on the comic book by Mark Millar (Wanted); and the apocalyptic Book of Eli, which will bring Denzel Washington to Comic-Con.
Ironically, one of last year’s big hits is crashing this year’s party. Next Saturday night, director Zack Snyder will host a BD-Live community screening of the director’s cut of Watchmen, where he will give commentary during the movie to fans at the convention, and also to BD-Live viewers watching the movie (in stores Tuesday) on their Internet-enabled Blu-ray players around the world.
