Comic-Con: A showcase for fall and winter video games

Clementine CCILogo-RWhen it comes to selling video games, there's no better place than Comic-Con.  Some of the most eagerly anticipated games for the fall and winter will be among those set up for demo at one end of the convention hall next week.  There’s starpower in some games, such as Jack Black voicing the heavy-metal hero of Brutal Legend (that’s him at left). Click read more for Brian Truitt's list of what to try out at the con next week.

Brutal Legend may turn out to be a funnier role for Black than his recent live-action part in the movie Year One. He voices Eddie Riggs, the “world’s greatest roadie.” Stay tuned to my Twitter feed for all the scoop.

Dante'sInferno10 Dante’s Inferno is a video-game adaptation of the literary classic where you, as an Italian mercenary named Dante, have to battle your way through hell and back — all nine circles of it! — to save a damsel in distress. A 10-foot-tall Dante will be positioned on the floor so conventioneers can't miss it.

Xbox 360 is going to San Diego with a variety of titles, starting with the latest in its signature Halo series, Halo 3: ODST, a first-person shooter expansion. Horror-loving gamers will want to get their hands on the sequel Left 4 Dead 2. Xbox has non-gaming material on its Xbox Live online service, and the company will be unveiling details about the upcoming third season of the popular downloadable sitcom, The Guild.

SWOR_MagCv_smug_wook_CMYKStar Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the original Star Wars flick, as the Sith Empire is trying to wipe out the Republic and all the Jedi. You can play as a Jedi, Sith or even as a smuggler like Han Solo.

Superhero games are abundant, too: In Batman: Arkham Asylum, you get to play as the Caped Crusader against all of his arch-enemies; Iron Man II is being unveiled for the very first time by Sega; and Sony’s DC Universe Online is like World of Warcraft with comic book characters, an MMO (massively multiplayer online) game that gives you the ability to be Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman or a number of other heroes and interact with gamers from all over the world.

Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming movie Inglorious Basterds is making it cool to foil Nazis again, and  The Saboteur casts the player as a streetwise Irish mechanic in occupied Paris during World War II. The mission? Take your revenge on the Third Reich by dismantling as much of it as you can.
