Comic-Con collectors go for pop-culture goodies

Beet Watch in case1 4-3-09 CCILogo-R One of the best things about a large-scale pop-culture convention? The large number of pop-culture goodies there are to be had. Comic-Con always rolls out exclusive items that are only available at the con, although, not surprisingly, sometimes they are available at online retailers after. Last year, our Brian Truitt picked up a Dwight Schrute bobblehead, based on Rainn Wilson’s character from The Office, and he says there will be a special Schrute Farms Beets watch ( at right) on sale at the NBC Store at the convention. Click read more for some of the items Brian thinks will become Comic-Con must-haves.

The NBC Store also will have Heroes merchandise, a Chuck polo shirt and a neat-o Battlestar Galactica Cylon toaster, with flashing LED.

SDCC 09 Baroness_1 Hasbro  has a colorful My Little Pony (for the fangirls in the audience), a smiling Luke Skywalker Star Wars action figure, a Wolverine Mighty Mugg vinyl figure, a black-and-white Captain America figure, and two special G.I. Joe exclusives tied to the upcoming Rise of Cobra movie.

Meg_3 Shout! Factory is releasing the complete series of G.I. Joe that and the Transformers cartoons from the 1980s at Comic-Con; they’ll be widely available in the fall. T

Mattel has an action figure set of Ghostbuster brainiac Egon Spengler and Slimer the ghost as well as a Green Lantern Justice League Unlimited three-pack (check with MattyCollector.com for those after the event); Diamond Comics is serving up a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man bank and Stay Puft and Peter Venkman Minimates figures; and Graffiti Designs is teaming with DC Direct for a limited series of Green Lantern toys based on the new Blackest Night comics storyline.

08001+Ben+Linus+w+Box Pop-culture retailer Entertainment Earth is bringing a bunch of items and selling them online, too. So, if a Transporting Spock bobblehead from Star Trek or classic 1980s Flash Gordon action figures strike your fancy, that’s the place to go. Also featured: quite a few Dexter knickknacks, such as bobbleheads of all the main cast members and a “Dark Defender” Dexter action figure. Unfortunately, you’ll have to get somebody going to Comic-Con to get you the vendor’s coolest item: a Benjamin Linus Lost bobblehead, limited to 1,008 pieces.

Hey, wouldn't it be cool if USA Today's coverage of Comicon International actually covered something about comic books?
