Check out our special 'Twilight' cover, featuring Robert Pattinson

091025cover You can’t read a book, watch a movie, hunt for a Halloween costume or tune into TV these days without running into vampires, and our cover story this weekend takes a look at why bloodsuckers — with franchises such as Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries — are so hot in pop culture right now. In addition to interviewing True Blood book author Charlaine Harris and Dacre Stoker, Dracula author Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew, our Brian Truitt had the chance to talk with cover boy Robert Pattinson, the popular star of Twilight and the upcoming sequel New Moon (in theaters Nov. 20). Pattinson, who plays the vampire Edward Cullen, was up in Vancouver filming Eclipse, the third adaptation from Stephenie Meyer’s book series coming out next year. “Almost every scene is a fight scene at the moment — for the last couple of weeks anyway,” he reports. “We’ve been doing splits for the past week and a half.” Read below for some of Pattinson’s thoughts on Eclipse and making the Twilight movies, and check out this new clip from New Moon featuring his co-stars, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. (Also, to find a newspaper near you that carries USA WEEKEND, click here.)

For each movie, Pattinson says he’s tried to reinvent Edward a little bit. The first Twilight film had him falling in love with the human Bella (Stewart); New Moon has him banishing himself from Bella’s life, thereby creating a love triangle with the werewolf Jacob (Lautner); and Eclipse creates a tenuous co-existence between Edward and Jacob. “He’s definitely quite different” in Eclipse, Pattinson says of Edward. “In some ways, he’s more relaxed being around humans, and at the same time, he’s competing a lot more with Jacob so he has a lot more petty emotions rather than just thinking in these absolutes like he did in the first two. I’m just trying to keep it interesting for myself as well.”

DF-12797 What does Pattinson retreat to at the end of the day after leaving the Eclipse set, swooning fans and the ever-present paparazzi behind? Creating music in his hotel room. “It’s nice to have a bit of artistic or creative endeavor that isn’t so pressurized,” he explains. “So many people have an opinion, especially when you’re doing the Twilight movies. Making this movie, it’s almost as if people have become more concerned with what the fans want the more successful it becomes. The first one seemed more relaxed than this one, and that one wasn’t particularly relaxed. But it’s nice to do music where no one’s too concerned with what I’m doing with it. It’s kind of a relief.”

While there is no official word on when the film adaptation of Meyer’s final (at least so far) Twilight book, Breaking Dawn, will happen — Pattinson figures he’ll be working on that in the summer — the British actor doesn’t know if he will miss being Edward Cullen when all is said and done. “I’ve just been so tightly bound,” Pattinson admits. “I did another movie in New York over the summer, and it was so tightly bound to Twilight. You have huge groups of fans and paparazzi and stuff, and it was a tiny little indie. It still felt like I was doing a Twilight movie in a lot of ways. It’ll be interesting to see how I’ll feel about the whole thing a couple years after it’s all finished.”

Twilight series has been my favorite book to read. It's a complete package for a never ending happiness, a world where I would love to be in.
New Moon has the right director with great vision and talent to do job right. I hope they can re-create Twilight, the first movie of the series, and retire the original version. That directing job was very poorly done, I was extremely disappointed.
November 20 is not coming fast enough. And I can't wait to see the Eclipse nor Breakind dawn.

I hate si fi, never cared for fictional vampires or warewolfs, but love Hitchcock. Read the books only out of curiosity. WOW, did I get hooked! My grandkids asked for the movie and it was just as I had imagined. I'm looking forward to the next one! All three generations are hooked!

I am a 14 year-old. I love the books and have read them several times. I saw the movie when it came out, and when I found out there were books, I immediately purchased and read them. I think Mrs. Meyer is an excellent writer, despite the negative things some people say about her. I'm impatiently waiting for the rest of Midnight Sun. I thought Twilight was wonderful but Midnight Sun much better. I actually hope she will write New Moon from Edward's perspective. I am extremely looking forward to the movie, I think it is going to be a lot better than Twilight. I absolutely love and adore Robert Pattinson and I love his portrayal of Edward. He is such a beautiful man and he seems very humble and down to earth. I believe he has a wonderful voice and his acting skills are phenomenal.

As a 33 yo mom of 4, I've always enjoyed paranormal fiction, some simply romantic, other rather grisly stuff. I admit that I saw the movie first, so that kind of preset my mind as to what the characters should look like when I read the books. I think that if Midnight Sun had been written and available when Twilight was made that the 1st movie would be even better than it already was. It's lacking Edwards side. I think it would have been sooo much more intense with more from him. I have read thru the series too many times to count, though it's been a couple of months since my last read thru. I'm hoping to re-read Twilight and New Moon before I go see the movie. For all the girls and women who find themselves a little stuck in Bella's and the Cullens world, you are not alone. It's hard to put down and go back to your reality, even a really great reality, without them being a part of it. That's why it's so addictive. With some time, I think it gets easier, but I'm sure as soon as I see the new movie, I will be sucked back down into their beautiful lives and romance all over again. A different author of the genre wrote a kind of negative thing about how Meyers sanitize the series so much and how it's so dangerous for girls thinking that Bella always needs to be saved. But time after time, I think it's Bella who is strong or becomes stronger and saves Edward ultimately. I can identify with that.

I love the Twilight series. I have read the series two times now working on three times now. I am getting ready for New Moon the movie. I can't wait. I am 32 years old and Stephanie Meyers opened my world to reading. I had never read a novel all the way through in my life until Twilight and since then I have read 50 or more books. I read Twilight November 2008. My mom is a serious Twilight fan as well. She has read the series 16 times and counting. At least I am not the only one obsessed in my family. LOL! And I agree with the other comments and will also beg for Midnight Sun.

I remember yelling at my daughter Cuca to stop reading the book!! She'd never put it down.......morning, noon and very late night. She was a senior HS and she fell in love with these books. I was so glad she finished them and "GRADUATED"...yeah. As she was heading off to college this fall she left behind the books. Feeling my little bird had left the nest to begin her new journey in life I began to read the books and totally fell in love with them as well. I read all of them in in less than a week. I read before and after work. I read every chance I could I couldn't put the books down. I was HOOKED. Thanks Steph for writting them. You have such a great gift. Thanks for sharing :)

I am also a grown-up fan of twilight. This sneak peek scene looks great. I must admit I was disappointed with the first movie, as I thought they left out a lot of the dialogue and scenes that made the book so intriguing. I think this movie (NM) will be better, because one of the only things I didn't like about Bella in the book is that she was at times a weak character, as a woman, until the final book, where she totally blossomed into full-on Bella. Seeing her give Jacob's mate a smack makes me think they are strengthening up her character already, which I think will only strengthen the movies. I look forward to it.. and I too hop Meyers does Midnight Son and more!!

Like so many that have commented to this article, I'm not a teenager. I am 32 years old and a mother. I started to read "twilight" before the movie came out and couldn't put it down. I then read all 3 others with the same enthusiasum.Sadly I can relate to Bella's character on so many different levels (minus the vampire part). In love with someone you feel is too good for you, discover he has the same feelings for you, you both share the same morals not to go too far, ultimately he leaves you thinking it's best for both of you, you confide in your best friend(who happens to be a guy)a the relationship becomes compromised, your love realizes he can't stay away from you any longer, then thinks he's too late, soon things work out, your best friend doesn't understand any of it, your love proposes and you accept sqimshly, short engagement, marriage, beautiful honey moon, and together forever and ever.....(that's the parts i can relate to at least) yes I married my soul mate. That I found junior of high school, that I remember very vividly that ALOT of people said we would never work out. I love seeing there faces now and then when they see us both so much in love as we were back then..."This Bella married her Edward". I hope and pray that "Meyers" will continue the "Cullen Story" and please, please "Midnight Sun". As for Robert and the rest of the cast for the movie series everyone has done an excellent job. Kristen and Robert's chemistry is on point akward and endearing like young love really is. It all is just beautiful

I can remember when I was reading the Twilight series for the first time. I went to bed thinking about it and woke up thinking about it. I remember my mood for the day being determined by what I was reading in the series at the time. I was quite crabby when Edward left in NM. The books remind me so much of that true first love feeling that we all should be so lucky to experience. How it unfolded to create the ultimate love story of heartache, longing, trusting, and eventually being with that one person forever that is your true soul mate.

I would catch myself daydreaming at work while I was reading the series. I wonder what people were thinking as I was sitting there smiling for no apparent reason. lol

I can't wait to see all of the movies, especially Breaking Dawn, but,at the same time I don't want to see it end, because when it does it's all over, forever! And I can't deal with that. The Twilight Saga is my life.I need it and without it,without something coming at me to keep it alive i'm gone, basically. But overall I can't wait to see all of them.New Moon is looking good amd i'm sure i'll cry in the theater when I see it.

You know what's weird is that I would find myself having conversations with myself about how much Twilight means to me and how it's my life.I find myself crying all the time-New Moon-because of how otherworldly their love is and I guess we all thrive for a love like theirs.I somewhat have a special someone that I sort-of-kind-of-possibly-love like how Bella loves Edward. My guy is sweet, caring, funny, kind, loving, cute, charming and on top of all of that he's a real Getleman and he's British!

The Twilight books are good reads, and emotionally intense.

But Robert and Kristen took it to a new level in the movie. Their awkward intensity burned up the screen, and turned a flawed movie into an intense journey.

Although I can't fully know Mr. Pattinson from interviews, he is sometimes so honest with the press he gets himself in trouble. He's also intelligent and self-aware in a way most 23 yr olds are not. Add to that his curious lack of self-esteem and his "tough on the outside, helpless on the inside" manner, and he's a magnet to women of all ages. I'm glad he seems to be reaching a balance in his life. I would hate to see fame damage him.

I bought Twilight on a "humbug" during Holiday Week last year. Since then, I have read all four books and watched the DVD so many times that I have them memorized! I have experienced the type of uncertainty of love that Bella and Edward experienced. In New Moon, the anguish that Bella suffered after her break-up with Edward, echoed the same pain that I suffered when I went through the end of a 9 year relationship. Anyone who has experienced such intense emotional relationships can identify with these characters; which makes the series ageless.
Robert Pattinson is absolutely gorgeous and has a bright future! He is the sexiest vampire since Frank Langella!
