Spencer Grammer on Monday's midseason finale of 'Greek'
Posted by Lorrie Lynch Monday night brings the mid-season finale of the college-centric ABC Family show Greek, and it will be of much interest to longtime viewers because the end of this week’s episode featured a long-awaited kiss between two of the show’s main characters. Former lovers Casey — the bubbly, driven sorority girl played by Spencer Grammer (daughter of Cheers and Frasier star Kelsey Grammer) — and Cappie, Scott M. Foster’s witty slacker frat guy, have been on and off friends so far in the show’s three seasons, but many fans have wanted to see them back together for a while now. Our Brian Truitt talked with Grammer, 26, who’s just as effusive as her character, just after she finished up an archery lesson for an upcoming episode (“It really hurts when you hit yourself with the bow, just so you know,” she quips), so read below for their conversation and check out a clip featuring Grammer and Foster from Monday's Greek.

Casey has had her up and downs with guys since the show started, but the flirtation with Cappie was always there. Were you in favor of the pairing?
Yeah, I think it’s something the audience has wanted to see, but sometimes it feels like it could be the end of the series in some way when they finally get together. [Laughs] We’ve had a lot of talking about Casey and Cappie together, but you’ve never seen it on screen. It’s something that definitely was the next step to the show. We’ve played this love-triangle struggle thing, so it’s fun to be together. I’ve felt very strongly that these two characters were both independent and special and different in their own ways, and that bringing them together, I didn’t want to make them Boring Romantic Couple A or B.
We were always playing love scenes, but we’ve been playing more of the friend stuff, so it’s nice to have a transition and change. It’s always fun having love storylines because it makes you really optimistic about love, I guess, for me. You’re like, “Awww, it’s so sweet! One day you’ll meet a guy just like that!” But it’s TV. [Laughs]
Other than the new relationship with Cappie, what else will Casey have to deal with when the show comes back in January?
It’s the senior year for Casey and Cappie – I don’t know, Cappie’s still undeclared I guess – so we’ll be figuring out where everyone’s going to go: Are we going to law school, are we moving to New York City? We’re not really sure. Casey’s always sort of had some political aspirations so it looks like that’s generally where she might be going, but is Cappie going to be there with her? That’s the struggle for the next year.
Being an actor on a show that’s based in college, do you wonder where Greek will go past Casey’s graduation?
I’ve been doing this for a long time it feels like, off and on since I was little, and I always prepare for the worst-case scenario. Maybe that’s a testament to the kind of person I am. [Laughs] Things run their course, but we have a really special and unique show with some really talented actors and great writing that can connect to a wide variety of ages and different kinds of people. We have a staying power in some ways, but you never know. The economy’s crazy and the times, they are a-changin’, but they have some ideas for keeping the show around a little bit longer. So don’t worry out there!
Yes, I get to dance! It’s our take on High School Musical – except we’re in college, so I guess it’s Flashdance or something. We do a pretty good job considering I danced most of my life but haven’t in years. I’m hoping some of those moves are OK.
Have you ever danced on screen before?
No, but I did do this instructional hip-hop video for my friend, which was fun. I was one of the backup dancers. I was like 19, it wasn’t that long ago, but still. It’s a decent enough amount of time.
Your mom, Doreen Alderman, is a dance teacher and she performed off-Broadway. Does some of your own creativity come from your parents being artistic?
Maybe. I just needed an outlet for things going on in my life that you just become that way over time. Maybe you’re angry about something – you either write it down or you do something self-destructive, which is one path people go down. I found in my arts, whether it was acting or dancing or drawing or painting or writing, that was how I got a lot of that out. You are that way or you aren’t.
Does your dad watch Greek? Is he in favor of Casey and Cappie getting together?
I don’t think he watches Greek. It’s not really his kind of show. I know he’s proud of me. I’m working hard and stuff. It’s awkward for him, I think, to see his daughter making out with guys or being sexual.
Even on screen?
It’s kind of weird. It's funny because his [Frasier Crane] character was never really like that ever when I was growing up. He’s had some love storylines, but it’s always been a comedic thing. Ours ride the line of comedy and drama, so it’s a little different.
Have you been following his new sitcom Hank?
I haven’t watched it yet. I heard it’s good. We’ve been talking about it, but I really do need to watch it, though. I feel bad! [Laughs] I’m like, “Yes! It’s on my DVR!” I watch a lot of History Channel stuff, and it’s been a really fun month because it’s all the scary stuff with paranormal activities and Vlad the Impaler, so I’ve been watching that.
